RESEARCH LIBRARY HOLDS PRICELESS HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL TREASURES

The St. Croix Landmarks Society Research Library and Archives affords scholars, researchers, family historians, and others the opportunity to utilize its priceless treasures for research.  This library is special in the Caribbean in that it is a rich source of research materials, often holding treasures relating to the Caribbean and the Virgin Islands which are not available in any other library or archive.

The library holdings include the traditional research resources such as books, manuscripts, maps, artwork and even extensive collections of photographs.  These resources resulted primarily from donations, over the years, of private collections.  Manuscript collections continue to be acquired giving more research potential with the accessibility of primary source materials. These include personal, organizational, and business archives.

Graphic resources such as maps, artwork, and photographs often lend a dimension to research not found in more traditional resources.  Some of the Library and Archives' holdings include drawings of the Virgin Islands from 1843-1844 by Henry Morton, drawings from 1856 by Dr. Allen Voorhees Lesley, and an extensive photographic collection from Axel Ovesen, an early photographer in Frederiksted (1902 - 1972.)  In addition, there are street scenes from Christiansted and Frederiksted and images of buildings from both the towns and country estates in the 19th and 20th centuries.  Numerous photographs of individuals have also been reproduced from family albums for the research collections.

The library has Danish West Indian and Virgin Islands census records from 1841 through 1930 as well as slave lists, matricals, free colored lists and other government generated statistical records.  A current project involves the copying of church records and the St. Croix Vital Statistics records to add to the collections. An extensive vertical file collection on all aspects of Virgin Islands history includes unique genealogy materials.

The St. Croix Landmarks Society Library and Archives has grown largely because of the intense interest of Virgin Islanders, residents and visitors, as well as national and international scholars.  The book collection which is increasing almost daily contains about six thousand volumes completely processed, and perhaps another six thousand volumes with limited processing.

The collection of books, photographs, and other manuscript materials is available to St. Croix Landmarks Society members who are seriously seeking information and doing academic research.  Materials can only be used at the Library and Archives.  The facilities have been expanded  to accommodate the collections in a climate-controlled environment.

The Virgin Islands is indeed fortunate to have this extremely valuable and useful collection and personnel to assist local and off-island researchers.
