SUMMER Workshops at Whim

June 25 - August 3, 2007

For many years, summer camps have brought their campers to tour Estate Whim Plantation Museum. This year we are offering workshops for summer campers!  Most of the workshops are held indoors, so they are held even when it is raining! Workshops last approximately 2 hours. The cost for workshops is $4.00 per child; teachers and chaperones are free.
Registration is required for the workshops; workshops are limited to 30 participants due to space constraints. Workshops are sponsored by the Prosser ICC Foundation, Inc.

Workshops Available Include:

		Archaeology Dig - Students use real archaeological tools to excavate a "mock" archaeological dig, retrieve artifacts, and make hypotheses about their composition and uses. The dig has three layers representing the pre-Columbian period, the colonial period, and the modern period. An alternative to this outdoor activity is a dishpan dig that is held indoors using the same materials. Students use scientific methods to excavate and measure artifacts buried in sand in the dishpan dig.
		All About Chocolate - Students learn where chocolate comes from, how it is made into a drink, then grind up cacao seeds to make two different types of drinks. They make their own chocolate snack by mixing ingredients inside a plastic bag.
		Pirates! - Students learn the truth about pirates and how they lived, then go on a scavenger hunt on the grounds to earn a sweet reward. They learn about pirate flags and make their own flag to take home.
		Trade Beads - What were the first beads? What materials were used to make beads? What beads were traded for palm oil, gold, and ivory? Students will learn about the history of trade beads, observe beads made out of different materials, then make their own beaded item to take home.
