Christiansted to East End Tour

House Tours – North StreetNorth Street

Originally built in 1760 by Scottish plantation managers, this town house has been a theater, restaurant, bank, shell museum and a Masonic Lodge. The latest restoration added a kitchen/breakfast room and a small pool in two buildings that once housed a stable and nursery.

Exorcisms were performed there at the request of former owner. Some residents still claim supernatural experiences.

The owners have restored and decorated the property in true West Indian fashion with antique colonial mahogany pieces, an eclectic collection of art, oriental porcelain, pottery and artifacts from their travels to Europe and the Near East.

“Mon Plaisir / Martha’s Fancy”

The original house on this property was a small A-frame structure purchased in 1975. The house seen today was designed in 1987 by the homeowners and Boston architect Ralph Dinneen. One of the areas of focus in the construction was a roof with terracotta tiles.

Situated some 25ft above the Caribbean Sea and Buck Island, the home features panoramic views from an expansive terrace. The main house, terrace and pool garden are home to the owners’ extensive collection of treasures from wold travels as well as prints, paintings, sculpture and antiques.

Built in 1991, this home blends traditional local elements — casements, jalousies, louvered shutters, tray ceilings and transom ventilation — with details and style of the Art Moderne Movement of the 1920’s, seen in the horizontal striped design forms. Other details include geometric based ornament, curved elements, stone tile, ship rail details, wood paneling and stainless steel of the early modern period.

Its street wall feature reprises a neighborhood note, here morphing into a gate and garage wall. The seaside flagpole also repeats a common local theme.

The house was awarded an American Institute of Architects, V.I. Chapter, Award for Excellence in Architecture in 1994.

Hosue Tours – Estate SolitudeEstate Solitude

Modeled after a Danish overseer’s residence, this home — designed and built 13 years ago — is decorated with East Indies Dutch Colonial and West Indian antique furniture. Charm & simplicity are its hallmarks. The sea views to Buck island and land views of the hillside are breathtaking at an elevation of 500 feet above sea level.

It has both “old time” stained concrete and wood floors as well as very thick walls. Traditional jalousied shutters, thick storm shutters, tile and hardware made on St. Croix reflect the talent and culture of the island. The old world yet tropical design transports & delights.
