West End Tour
Estate Spratt Hall
This 1970’s ranch style home has been remodeled to reflect the owner’s world travels and interests. Twila Wilson and Associates assisted in this stunning makeover with a bold and colorful third world influence.
Showcases of ethnic treasures collected by the owner are incorporated into each room. Coral stone tile and Moroccan brick cover the patio. Customized mahogany louvered doors — handmade in St. Martin — and walls covered with Moroccan brick add to the comfort, beauty and color that combine perfectly throughout the house.
The outdoor living areas feature a blue tiled pool, a huge deck overlooking the sea, and many fruit trees.
Hospital Street
“The Pearl of Frederiksted”
Built in the late 18th century, the original design of this home was influenced by the Federalist style found in Philadelphia and Boston.
The 1841 census reveals that Major Peter Markoe occupied this house with his family. By 1855 the house was owned by the Ripperger family. Burned during the 1878 “Fiyah Buhn,” it doubled in size once rebuilt. For more than a century beginning in 1901, it was owned by the family of former Governor John D. Merwin.
The structure’s facade remained in the Federalist style until 2009 when it underwent a complete restoration inspired by the Victorian style, which became prevalent in Frederiksted after “Fiyah Buhn.”
Estate Mount Washington
In 1984, the ruins of the circa 1800 great house at Estate Mt. Washington were discovered buried in the rainforest. Restoration of the great house took two and a half years.
Featured in Colonial Homes Magazine, the home is a showplace for the owners’ collection of West Indian antiques. Other restored outbuildings include dungeons, stables, and a sugar mill installed with authentic 1800s wooden grinding machinery.
The grounds also include a Chartres-style labyrinth designed by the owner. The surrounding property, extending to the sea, has been designated a wildlife refuge.
