Kofi Boateng\, Mr. Duane Howell\, Dr. David Goldstein and Mr. Joel Tute in.\nCompleted in 1749\, the Danish West India and Guinea Company Warehous e took over the primary function of running the company's monopoly on the trade of all goods in the Danish Islands until 1754\, when the company was restructured through purchase by the Danish Crown. From this time forward the Company House was a critical node in European\, African\, and America n trade for the Danish Crown and all of its trading partners in the region .\nThe yard was the main slave market and port-of-call for the Danish Colo nies\, and from 1749 through 1803 was the physical hub of the Danish and f oreign slave and goods trade. Over the 54 year period\, from its construct ion to the end of the Danish slave trade\, people from at least 66 culture s from the West African coast and interior passed through the warehouse to plantations on St. Croix and throughout the Western Caribbean and North A merica.\nThe complex that we see today is a much reduced compound of what it was in the late 18th century. While the current footprint of buildings was similar to that of the early 18th century\, the warehouse complex was reduced by half of its maximum construction in the 1780s. The change in bu ilding plan was made to accommodate the end of the slave trade\, initial c ollapse of the sugar economy\, and the development of a site plan to accom modate the new Custom's House in the 1830s.\nFormat\nEach Ramble follows a similar format: We assemble at the site. Following a brief overview of the history of the property by a knowledgeable guide\, the hike takes u s to ruins and points of interest on the property.  The historic inter pretation and hike usually take from 60 to 90 minutes. Refreshments of local fruit drinks\, wine\, cheese and assorted breads and crackers rou nd out the afternoon.\n\n2:30 p.m.: Tickets on sale in front of King Chri stian Hotel\n3:00 p.m.: Easy walk begins.\nPark in National Park Service l ot.\n\n \nCost\n\n$15 for adults / $12 for St. Croix Landmarks Society me mbers\nStudents K-12 are free!\nSponsored in part by Schooner Bay Market P lace\n DTEND:20120129T213000Z DTSTART:20120129T190000Z LAST-MODIFIED:20120127T020100Z SUMMARY:Places That Matter/Ruins Ramble END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
